AIM Consultant Tricia Duncan recently had the opportunity to submit two Tableau dashboards to represent the Twin Cities Tableau User Group at the Tableau Conference 2018 (TC18), both of which ended up finishing in the top three. She contributed to the overall winner, which was Super Bowl themed, and spearheaded the development of the third place entry, which detailed the hottest places to be in New Orleans during TC18. Both entries are currently on display at the conference, where they are competing against all the other user groups in the nation!
In order to create her New Orleans event dashboard, she obtained an API through Yelp’s Fusion service, and then used Postman to generate API calls and produce a JSON for each restaurant category. The event data was scraped from over 500 URLs from a city-run website using Import.IO. Utilizing Tableau Prep, data from each source was unioned into two new files (restaurant or event data). Finally, the two files were joined to create a single data source that was connected to Tableau to begin building the visualization.
Tricia has been a part of the Twin Cities Tableau User Group for five years, and has been running it for three years. Additionally, she co-organized the Tableau Data Fluency and Data Visualization groups. Tricia will be speaking at MinneFRAMA, a local event organized by MinneAnalytics on December 3rd.
